Robin G. Brumfield, Ph.D.
Professor and Specialist in Farm Management

Robin Brumfield, Ph.D., has been working with the New Jersey Annie’s Project Team as state co-leader since 2011. She worked with the team to conduct focus groups to adapt this program from the mid-west to conditions in an urban state. She has arranged the workshops so that the women complete a business plan as part of the workshop. Robin took the Annie’s Project concept to Antalya, Turkey as her sabbatical project in late 2011. Project became known as Suzanne's Project. Robin G. Brumfield, Ph.D. has been the Farm Management Specialist at Rutgers University since 1988. She is internationally known for her work in horticultural economics and has given over 120 talks in fifteen countries. Her Greenhouse Cost Accounting Program is the standard in the greenhouse industry. She wrote the marketing and business management chapters for the best-selling textbook, Greenhouse Operations and Management by Dr. Paul V. Nelson. Before joining Rutgers University, she was Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Floriculture at The Pennsylvania State University for five years.

Jenny
Jenny S. Carleo
Agricultural Agent

Jenny Carleo has been working with the Annie’s Project Team as the coordinator for the South Jersey class since 2010. Her work also emphasizes cut flower research, farm business management and agritourism. Jenny is the manager of the grant for the 2012 Annie’s Project to be held in three locations in New Jersey.

Jeff Heckman
Program Coordinator for
CPE Media Productions
Jeff Heckman is the Program Coordinator for CPE Media Productions. He provides professional video and photography services to Rutgers faculty and staff to increase the University’s online visibility. On Annie’s Project he will be recording and uploading all of the Annie’s Project Classes for viewing on the web.

Jennifer Matthews
Program Coordinator
Jennifer Matthews has been the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County’s Master Gardener Coordinator since 2008. In addition to volunteer management, she also offers educational enrichment programs to the Master Gardeners and works with the County Agricultural Agent on an educational program called The Country Life Series which covers topics ranging from seed starting to organic farming. She is the program coordinator for Annie’s Project NJ 2012 which educated 175 farm women across the state using a blend of video, voice and webinar technology which combined in-person learning and distance education. In addition to her work with Cooperative Extension, Jennifer has a horse farm in Cape May Court House, grows organic produce for market and gives lectures on raising chickens for backyard egg production.

Meredith Melendez
Meredith Melendez
Agricultural and Resource Management Agent
Meredith Melendez is the agricultural agent for Rutgers Agriculture Resource Management Agents in Mercer County. She offers outreach and education to growers in Mercer County focusing primarily on diversified small farms. Meredith offers outreach statewide on farm food safety including preparation for third party audits and the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices on NJ farms. Her research focuses have included on-farm food safety sampling, cover crop evaluation, and soil copper evaluation on New Jersey farms. Meredith has a B.S. in Plant Science from Ferrum College and a M.A. in Environmental Conservation Education from NYU. Prior to working in Mercer County Meredith was the Horticulture Consultant for Rutgers Cooperative Extension in Burlington County for four years. Past work experience includes teaching Agriculture at a public high school in Queens and managing rooftop production greenhouses in NYC.

Barbara O’Neill, Ph.D., CFP, CRPC, AFC, CHC, CFEd, CFCS
Specialist in Financial
Resource Management
Dr. Barbara O’Neill, Ph.D., is Extension Specialist in Financial Resource Management for Rutgers Cooperative Extension. She holds the rank of Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University and has written over 1,800 newspaper articles and over 130 articles for professional publications. A certified financial planner, she is the author or co-author of eight books. She also provides national leadership for the Cooperative Extension program Small Steps to Health and Wealth and directed the five-year MONEY 2000 savings and debt reduction campaign in the 1990s that resulted in over $20 million of economic impact nationwide. In addition, she has delivered over 260 national/regional conference presentations. Dr. O’Neill earned a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech and has received over three dozen national awards and over $980,000 in grants to support her financial education programs and research.

Nicholas Polanin
County Agricultural Agent
Nicholas Polanin is currently an Associate Professor (County Agent II, with tenure) with Rutgers University, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Cooperative Extension in Somerset County. Since joining Rutgers University in 1999, Nick has been nationally recognized for his leadership and educational initiatives in training arborists and other tree care professionals, workforce development, distance education, and volunteer management. Prior to joining Rutgers in 1999, Nick has 15 years experience in sales and marketing in landscape management. He currently serves as statewide coordinator for the Rutgers Master Gardener Program. Nick holds an MS in Horticulture/Urban Forestry (1989), and a BS in Natural Resource Management/Forestry (1982), both from Rutgers University.
